1 Book Left!!

I have 1 book left to read to reach my goal of 50 books in a year! I didn’t think it was possible to read this many in 1 year because my eyes tire easily and I get nasty headaches. But with the help of audiobooks and totally ignoring my writing, I’ve gotten tons of reading done.

hsb1I’m finishing this year with Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. A guy who collects strange, macabre things buys a ghost from an online auction site. That’s all anyone needs to hear to know that it’s a horror story and that bad things will ensue. I don’t say “terror” because I have yet to be scared and the main character is pretty stoic. I like it so far. It’s interesting and much better than the last horror book I read – The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

9780143039983_custom-1be2c41b5c4785a02648046db6cabbe6bc62ebf2-s6-c30The Haunting was supposed to be one of the top 10 scary books out there (authors could be represented by a single book or else Stephen King might have taken up more spots). I’m not the kind of person who believes a scary book must have blood and guts, but I do believe that something has to happen in it. There were moments of action in The Haunting but they led to nothing. Nothing happened. Eleanor went crazy and you followed her meandering, nonsensical thought process all through the book but it didn’t grab me as a psychological thriller or anything. For me, it was a flop and pretty boring. I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads but only because there were those moments of action that were good. Otherwise I would’ve given it 2 stars. I didn’t hate it, I was just thoroughly bored. It was also short, thank goodness.

I was quite disappointed.

Why did I pick Heart-Shaped Box? Because someone on Goodreads asked Kendare Blake, author of Anna Dressed in Blood (I thought it was a great book), what 3 books scared her the most. This was one that she mentioned so I thought I’d check out the audiobook version. The reader is awesome and the book has been pretty good too though reading about a protagonist who’s like Ozzie Ozborne was a bit odd at first.

What book scared you the most?

About Katie St. John-Shin

I believe in living life and not letting it pass you by. I mean, come on, if you really want to do something but don't have the courage to do it so you let the opportunity disappear, you may regret it for the rest of your life. How can you know what you're capable of unless you go for it? Like every writer, I naturally plan on becoming a world-famous writer. I love reading, writing, fitness, coffee, watching my favorite movies/shows, listening to music, and trying new things even if they're sometimes terrifying. I'm a stay-at-home mom, a writer, and a POP Pilates instructor. I didn't think I'd succeed at that last one but I did it! I confronted my fears, dealt with things I didn't want to deal with, and completed the training! POP Pilates classes are coming soon to mid-Nebraska!

  1. Yeah, I tend to read, reread, and rereread books I love because I know they won’t disappoint me. I haven’t read any horror/thriller books since Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes.” I love the Twilight Zone though, although that’s not horror, but it is creepy. Same with certain Sci-fi short stories. I started reading a book by a new author I haven’t read before, and it’s been difficult to get into :/ Congrats on reading 49 books. That’s quite a lot 😀

  2. Oops! Thought I replied to this a long time ago too. I’m really slipping!

Thanks! I actually surpassed my goal by a couple books. The Twilight Zone can be creepy, you’re right. I used to watch the show a lot. Always liked it. 😀 I didn’t know there books though. Cool!
