Winter Holiday Deals

I was hoping to have different news for my December post, but no. I’ve been attempting to write a short story to submit to an anthology, but it’s been slow-going. I don’t usually have this much difficulty getting a short story out. It’s like archaeology where you find part of a bowl but then can’t seem to find the rest of it.

Anyway, on to the real news!

So to celebrate the winter holidays, I’ve decided to give my books away for FREE! Not All Dark Places because I have no control over that one. I’ll be sticking with my Kathryn St. John fantasy books. All three cover Greek mythology, none are suitable for children. Here’s the schedule:

December 17-21 (Monday through Friday)

December 24-28 (Monday through Friday)

December 31 – January 4 (Monday through Friday)

These books are normally $2.99, $3.99, and $4.99, respectively. During the times listed, however, the ebooks will be completely FREE on Amazon!

Sale starts tomorrow for most people! Unless you’re in a time zone where it’s already the 17th. If you are and you see that Psyche is already available, go for it! But for the rest of us, we’ll have to wait till Monday. I’d also be eternally grateful if you’d also leave a review or just stars on Amazon or Goodreads. Even if it’s a negative review, authors desperately need them. I get so giddy when I see someone’s done a review, or on Goodreads, left stars. ❤ Thanks!!! Happy Reading!

New Book Updates!

Holy! Moly! It’s been a loooooong time since I last posted. I’d say it’s because I had nothing to say, but that’s only half true. I had something to say a couple weeks ago, but I forgot. Well…now I have three things to say! I’ll go in chronological order.

All Dark Places

All Dark Places is a horror anthology released by Dragon Soul Press. Within this book is the debut of my horror pseudonym – Anna Sinjin. I won’t go into how I chose that name except to say that it is, in fact, part of my real name. There are five short horror stories, mine is the second – The Cursed Mirror by Anna Sinjin.

I was pretty excited to participate in this anthology. One, because it was my first anthology. Two, because it was with an actual publishing house. And three, because it was horror, and horror is my true love. They were pretty nice to work with, and I’m currently working on another short story for another anthology of theirs. It’s romance this time. Hopefully, it’ll be accepted as well, but who knows. If nothing else, I got my horror name out there and have met some amazing people.

Ruxandra Tudorica made the front cover, while the back cover for the paperback was created by someone else whose name I don’t know. In any case, it’s a wonderful cover with just the right amount of fun mixed in with the horror. The formatting is awesome, the stories are awesome. Everything is AWESOME! If you don’t know by now, “awesome” is one of my favorite words (and I also love the Everything Is Awesome song from the Lego Movie, so…yeah). I’ll talk more about Rux later in this post because I didn’t work with her on this (the publishers did), but I did work with her on my third piece of news.

E-book – $3.99

Paperback – $14.99

Psyche (Myths of Olympus series)

I made a MAJOR update to Psyche from the Myths of Olympus series. Between the time it was published and this year, I’ve made some serious advancements in my editing and formatting knowledge. It was brought to my attention that I hate commas…or had just gotten supremely lazy with them because I tend to ignore a lot of grammar rules in my off-time. I also learned that the formatting I was using was ONLY for submitting manuscripts to agents. Cue The Scream. So I stopped everything I was doing and went through the book, editing and formatting like a fiend till it was as close to perfect as I could get it.

Another thing that pushed me to fix all the errors was that I had a new cover!! Isn’t it lovely? Lily Dormishev created it for me. I am SO in love with it!! I gave her a general idea of the book, along with another cover she had done that had started this obsession in the first place, to let her know the style I really liked. She went from there to create a work of art! I’m constantly drooling over her work and forcibly holding myself back from buying her covers. I should stand up as I say this and go on with, “Hello, I’m Katie, and I’m a cover addict.” Cue the sobbing into my hands as I sit back down. There are perhaps a handful of covers I’m itching to buy, but I can’t because I already have too many projects lined up that I’ll probably be busy writing for the next decade (yay!). Honestly though, I’m really not sure how long I’ll be able to hold out. Maybe another year at the most? I need to write faster. I’m going to horde my Christmas money for future covers.

Anyway, go to Lily’s site if you want to check out more of her work or order a commission yourself – Lily Dormishev. Even if you aren’t a writer and have no need of book covers, you should still check it out just for some serious eye candy.

Soooo, after I finished fixing Psyche and saw this awesome cover Lily made for me, I went a little crazy. Her prices are so reasonable…I couldn’t help it! I had a gorgeous new cover, fresh editing, fresh formatting…I needed a paperback as well.

Did you know a paperback another set of completely different formatting? Yep. And there’s a lot more to do for it too. I posted about my formatting woes till it got to the point where someone suggested I make “format” my new F word. I actually liked that idea quite a bit, so if you hear me say something like, “What the format!” you’ll know I’m cursing in my own unique way…and I’m probably extremely ticked off because I don’t usually drop the F bomb.

I’m going to skip all those details, but I will say, after much hassle, the e-book and paperback are available to buy on Amazon.

E-book – $2.99

Paperback – $10.99

Shadow’s Strength (Daughter of Nyx Book 2)

This has been two years in the making! I cannot believe it’s finally happening. Book 2 of the Daughter of Nyx series is finally being released! It’s currently available for pre-order as an e-book on Amazon. Paperbacks won’t be available until the third and final book of the series is out. Only then will I start to bring them out as paperbacks. I already have the appointment made with the designer, so there’s no way I can be tempted to bring them out sooner.

Who’s the designer? The lovely Ruxandra Tudorica who also did the cover for the first book, Night’s Treasure! While the first book was a premade that was tweaked to better match my preferences, this cover was a pure custom job. I seriously like how the covers are coming along and can’t wait for the third one and then the paperbacks as well. It’s so exciting! Rux is awesome to work with. Friendly yet professional and awesomely talented. Her works speaks for itself. If you’re interested in more of her work (or to commission her yourself), you can head on over to her website – MethyssART.

By the way, quick note on Night’s Treasure since I mentioned it earlier. It needs some major editing and formatting (just like Psyche did). It’s on my To Do list, and I’ll be working on it slowly as a side project, but don’t expect it to be finished within a week or anything. I mention this in case you take a look at the book and decide it’s worthless because the formatting is wrong and my commas are disastrous. Please don’t hate me for past comma crimes!

E-book – $4.99

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was a long post, I know. Kudos to you if you made it this far. I promise not to wait till I have a mountain of news before posting again. In fact, I should have some news in December so expect something that month. There’s the short romance story I’m working on for another Dragon Soul Press anthology and then there’s my next novel project. Preferably, I’ll be able to give updates one at a time instead of both at once.
Book Cover Artists + Cover Reveal
Early in January I was finally able to update my cover art for Night’s Treasure. I was so excited! I meant to announce it here but looking back I see that I forgot. But that’s okay because it’s not like it was a new book or anything.
Here’s the new cover made by the oh so talented Ruxandra Tudorica (MethyssART)…
Click on the art to buy Night’s Treasure by Kathryn St. John, available on Amazon for $3.99
I love it! It’s soooo much better than what I did myself. If I had had better graphic artist skills (mine are next to none), I would’ve bee happier with how mine turned out but I could not get past the grey blur around the silhouette. It ruined the whole thing for me!
My friend and fellow author, EarthGirly, won a premade from Ruxandra and gave it to me (having only entered because she had thought it would be perfect for Night’s Treasure). I was ecstatic!! Truly ecstatic. Three days later it was personalized for me and gracing Amazon as the new cover of Night’s Treasure!
In the delirium of my euphoria, I joined Ruxandra’s Facebook group (Methyss Art Premade Covers – the group is closed so you need to be given permission to get in) and have one future commission appointment set for August and then fingers crossed for other covers. If you’re interested, take a look at her page. Her work is beautiful and she’s so nice, patient, and friendly!
Through her I also found Ryse’s Cult. The artist there is Jennifer Munswami (J.M. Rising Horse Creations).
Holy. Freaking. Cow!
That’s all I have to say about her work. When I found out I had won a giveaway from her (amazingly gorgeous artwork that another author won in an auction plus a bunch of other stuff), I was so excited I started tiptoeing around and squealing (tiptoeing because that’s my version of jumping around, and squealing because it was 6:30am and I didn’t want to wake anyone up by screaming). Every time I thought about it for the rest of the day I’d get all giggly and start tiptoeing around. People around me would just laugh.
That day was absolutely exhausting.
Here’s some recent cover art of hers that’s been released…
Click on the art to preorder the book Soul Bound by A.J. Flowers
The auction for this cover got intense toward the end. They usually do. This one was won by A.J. Flowers. Soul Bound by A.J. Flowers is available for preorder on Amazon for $4.99.
Jennifer is pretty much booked till the end of time (only half kidding), but there are always last-minute cancellations and premades you can try your luck with so pop on over there too if you’re an author who loves quality covers. Or maybe you just want to oogle her work or buy extra swag or create brand artwork for yourself (not sure if she’s available for that right now or not), etc.
There are more but those are the main two I’m crushing on right now. Totally stalking and not ashamed.
Where has the time gone?
Wow! Life got super busy. I haven’t been writing since I finished Psyche because I’ve been reading and working on my fitness classes. Those classes used to be my “real” job. Now they really are a real job! Subbing, training, and my regular classes are taking up a ton of time (preparation still takes awhile for me sometimes). Then there’s my mommy duties, misc stuff, reading and I’m swamped! Also I may or may not have been playing video games when I shouldn’t have been a couple weeks back.
I don’t give a review for everything I read (especially here), but here are the books I’ve been indulging in:
  • Kurkow Prison by Ron Ripley (Team Scarestreet) audiobook presently reading
  • Dragons of Autumn Twilight by Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman presently reading
  • Captain Underpants #9 by Dav Pilkey presently reading
  • Grimm Fairy Tales Vol 1 by Ralph Tedesco presently reading
  • Sanford Asylum by Ron Ripley (Team Scarestreet) audiobook
  • Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton audiobook
  • Treat by Mary E Twomey
  • Red Winter by Annette Marie
  • Dark Tempest by Annette Marie
  • Dracula by Bram Stoker audiobook
  • Captain Underpants #1-7, 11, 12 by Dav Pilkey
  • The Lighthouse by Ron Ripley (Team Scarestreet) audiobook
  • The Town of Griswold by Ron Ripley (Team Scarestreet) audiobook
  • Tempt by Mary E Twomey
Yeeeeaaah…I read a lot of audiobooks. Mainly to save my eyes. And then all the Captain Underpants books are bedtime reading for my son. Honestly, though, I really suggest adults read them too. They’re hilarious! It’s my son’s current favorite series.
We discovered the series with #8 back in January or so and read in whatever order we could get them. He has fabulous memory when it comes to these stories but each book gives a short recap of what happened before if the two books are connected. If not, it gives a short recap of how Captain Underpants became Captain Underpants. We’re almost done with #9 and then he just checked out #10 yesterday from his school’s library so we’ll be done with the series within the week.
That Grimm Fairy Tales book is a graphic novel and it kinda sucks. I was hoping for some interesting stories but they’re pretty ho hum with some even being annoying. Very disappointed. I checked out 4 volumes from the library but I think I’ll return them all after I’ve finished this first volume. As you can see from my reading list above, I don’t have time for boring books.
My Goodreads reading challenge for 2017 is to read 150 books this year. Last year I challenged myself to read 100 and I went way over. Yay! So far I’ve finished 32 books and am 5 books ahead of schedule.
I’m sure I’ll fall into a groove by April…or May…at which point I’ll start incorporating writing back into my schedule. I’m sorry to say but when writing doesn’t pay the bills, it gets set on the back burner if there’s something else that does.
I just need to finish all this training crap and get settled into my new SilverSneakers classes and then everything will be good.
*fingers crossed*
However, one good thing! Night’s Treasure will be free for awhile on instaFreebie! So get it while you can! And please please PLEASE if you read it, leave a review on Amazon. Nobody knows if my books are any good if no one reviews them. I’m not above begging…that’s why I’ve put it up for free on instaFreebie. I’ll give the book to anybody who shows even a modicum of interest at this point if it’ll garner me some reviews. Obviously, I’ll give it away even if it doesn’t get me reviews because so far that’s what I’ve been doing.
Happy reading!
Weekend Writing Warriors 9 – Night’s Treasure
image
Weekend Writing Warriors | #8Sunday | 1/1/17
If you want to read other writer’s work, meet those writers, or participate yourself stop on by Weekend Writing Warriors. Every week writers get together here to share their work, published or unpublished.
Here’s my newest snippet (10 sentences) from Night’s Treasure for your reading pleasure. Just some quick info on it. This happens soon after the last snippet with the ritual. The house is on fire. The unknown woman talking to Sophy is Nyx, the goddess of night.
——– Night’s Treasure ——–
“Please, you must trust me. I know it is a lot to ask especially after the life you have led but, please. You must leave this place; you cannot stay here.”
“I have nowhere to go,” Sophy whispered.
As if on cue the roaring inferno from the basement burst through into the rest of the house, filling the night with flames. The intense heat stole Sophy’s breath and threatened to sear her skin where she lay crumpled int he grass. It consumed the house in seconds.
“Hermes,” the lady said, brisk and business-like. “The time has come. Take Sophia and wait for me by the mouth of the Styx.”
——– End of snippet ——–
nights-treasure-4
If you liked this snippet and you’re interested in reading the rest of the book, Night’s Treasure is available to buy as an ebook on Amazon for $2.99. Reviews are much appreciated! I’m trying to get some of those. I had some but Amazon deleted them for some reason. I think it had something to do with them being from family members. My family’s pretty honest (even when it’s bad though these weren’t), but it broke the review guidelines so Amazon took them down.
Weekend Writing Warrior 8 – Night’s Treasure
I’m back to participating with the Weekend Writing Warriors! If you want to read other writer’s work, meet those writers, or participate yourself stop on by Weekend Writing Warriors. Every week writers get together here to share their work, published or unpublished. #8Sunday
Here’s my newest snippet (9 sentences) from Night’s Treasure for your reading pleasure.
-Night’s Treasure-
“Daphne berries,” he informed with his rasping whisper.  “Mixed with poppies.  A merciful way to die.  You will slip off to sleep and awake in Tartarus or the Underworld, depending on which route you take.”
The rise of her chest was imperceptible as Sophy drew a shuddering breath that she feared would be one of her last.  The cloying aftertaste of Leuco’s draught was sharp and disgusting on her tongue.
“You do not offer yourself of your own free will,” he stated.
“I do.”  Her voice was a hoarse whisper as she forced out the lie.
-end of Night’s Treasure excerpt-
nights-treasure-4Night’s Treasure is a fantasy novel that delves into the world of Greek mythology. It follows Sophy, a demigod and daughter of Nyx, as she endeavors to find a way to gain immortality and join the family she’s always wanted but never had in Tartarus. However, there are powerful gods who have no intention of letting her disappear into the darkness below the Underworld and Sophy must fight for her life and her freedom before she can find peace and love. But will her power over the dark by enough or will she fall prey to the selfish, cruel gods who seek to use her?
This novel has been published by Kathryn St. John…in other words, by me. You can find it as an e-book on Amazon for $2.99. HOWEVER! Wait another week or so and you’ll be able to download it for FREE!
In honor of the holidays and as an end of year bang, I’m giving Night’s Treasure away for FREE on Amazon! Yay! I thought a fun freebie for the end of the year would be nice. Really, I just want people to be enjoying my stories like I do. It makes me so happy when I hear that other people enjoyed it.
img_8525
My only request is to please please please leave a review so I know how I did and what I should work on and so others have a guide to let them know how the book is. It’s not mandatory or anything, but I would seriously appreciate it!
Don’t forget! The last week of 2016!
12/26 – 12/30.
I would’ve made it longer but I’m only allowed 5 days. Sorry about that. But 5 days is more than enough to download it! Tell your friends, tell your relatives, tell everyone!
Night’s Treasure on Amazon NOW!
nights-treasure-4Night’s Treasure is now available on Amazon as an e-book for the Kindle and Kindle app. It came out on December 1st, 2016 and I couldn’t be happier! Well, I could. I could if everyone in the world was buying it, but that’s never going to happen. Not even Agatha Christie or the Bible has been bought by every single person in the world.
I don’t know if I’d want that kind of success anyway though. Imagine how many haters there’d be out there because of course not everyone likes the same things. I don’t think I could take that kind of negativity. Or popularity for that matter.
Anyway, December 1st I woke up all excited to check out Amazon and see my book on display to be bought. That is, until I found out our internet was down.
shocked_chibi_girl_by_dokidokimaddy-d4uejkhMy husband was at work (he wouldn’t have known how to fix it anyway) and it was too early to call my dad for help, so I rolled up my figurative sleeves and started messing with the internet box. After a couple failed attempts, I fixed it! For those out there wondering how to do so: I turned off the box, then unplugged it from the other box it was connected to (I’m so detailed and knowledgeable), counted to 10, then plugged it back in and switched the box back on. VOILA! Magic.
So with my new Ms Fix-It status securely in my ego, I proceeded to get on Amazon and revel in the glory of having a book published. A minute later I had the bright idea to take a screenshot and post it on FB. My first guessed attempt failed.
Problem: I had no idea how to do that anymore. I learned in high school but it’s been well over a decade since then so I’ve forgotten.
Solution: Google it!
Directions immediately came up. And they were so easy! So I tried. Failed again. Then I saw that laptop users needed to press another button. Oh. Feeling like my Ms Fix-It status was getting tarnished, I tried again. WOOHOO! Success!
So I went to FB and uploaded the picture there. Huh. I peered at it – it looked kind of weird. Where was my e-book cover? I clicked it for a closer look.
I took a screenshot of the directions for how to take a screenshot.
OMG! What’s wrong with me???!!! In mild shame and deep stupidity, I took another screenshot of my book’s Amazon page and uploaded it onto FB. Everything was great and 100% perfect so I once more esteemed myself and lauded in my brilliance!
Yeah, I was on Cloud 9 yesterday and had a great time all day. I was gushing on the phone to my dad after those technical wonders and caught myself giving a Queen wave at the walls. Seriously!
queenelizabeth70s
I was talking on the phone and telling my dad how I had figured out tech stuff that kids are now born knowing and my hand went straight up in the air and did a Queen wave at the walls! When I realized what I was doing, I burst out laughing and of course told my dad who laughed at me too. When I did it again, I announced it and he joined in. Queen waves to all walls everywhere!
